exploring germany on way to Oktoberfest

I am traving Solo through Germany from my brothers house in Bremen, through to Munich for Oktoberfest. My dates are not flexible unfortunately. I want to try and be at Oktoberfest on the opening day and see the first keg tapped. I am happy to stay in Germany, I have been thinking of going to Berlin to check out the night life and do tours/sight seeing during the day. I have also been thinking about jumping into neighbouring countries to do hikes up mountains to see the sights.
