Flexible, 3-month road trip across the US!

I'm a 33 year old male, been working in NYC for years. My lease expires in August and it's time to go on a road trip! I don't have any specific plans yet, but I'd like to be on the road from September until Christmas, making stops to see family (and stay free!) in Sarasota FL, and Albequerque NM. I'll have a car, and a tent, and will be couch surfing as well.
